SALT Exemption

Reform is needed to address issues that have arisen from the elimination of the SALT deduction which disproportionately hurts the middle class and retirees in our district. At the same time, we should recognize that New York needs deep reform to fix its excessive property tax burden.

Josh supports low taxes and is disappointed that New York State enable a system that crushes its residents with property taxes while counting on Federal tax deductions to soften the blow of Albany’s irresponsibility. While the SALT deduction might be flawed, it protects residents in the 17th district from a State government gone awry. It leaves some money in the pockets of those who need it and those who can spend it and put it back into the local economy. Therefore, Josh strongly supports reinstating an expansive version of the SALT deduction similar to the past one. In this district, the limits on the SALT deduction has caused pain and stress for middle class folks and retirees, some living on fixed incomes. This is salt on the wound of living in an area with already extremely high property and income taxes. Perhaps, irresponsible states deserve to be held to account for irresponsible tax and spend policies. There are other ways to penalize states for abusing this system that does not inflict pain on our residents. Expecting them to further tighten their budgets is flat-out wrong, and Josh will fight to stop it.
